Getting Kalanchoe to Flower?

I started quite a few kalanchoes from leaf cuttings back in May.  So far,
they haven't flowered although there's quite a lot of leaf development.

Are the plants too young to flower or should I follow the advice that I
found in a house plant book, to wit:  cover them with black cloth for 12
hours a day each evening in the month of september?
