John et al.,
Fortunately, here in East Tennessee (6b) the transition from outdoors to
indoors can be postponed for another month or so..Normally, this time of
year I do start taking cuttings of my tender perennials (primarily Salvia
spp.) to carry over..This year, though, I'm off for a family vacation in
Ireland for two weeks, so won't take cuttings til the end of the month.
I spent the weekend hauling all my potted plants (felt like hundreds of
them, probably far fewer) up to the patio, where they will be watered by
the sprinkler on a timer while I'm gone. You mentioned Hibiscus..I have
about 35 of them, ranging from new seedlings to the Ol' Grandpa of the
bunch, a Seminole Pink in a 14" pot. In our summer heat and humidity they
need watering daily. Many of them are in full bloom right now, although as
usual the grafted hybrids are lagging behind and probably won't reach peak
bloom til late fall. So for that reason, I don't fall prune mine. All my
pruning, fertilizing, repotting or soil replenishment (your 2" method)
happens in February-March.
Also did a little MB hunting on my orchids, a la Lori.
Gerry (desperately doing rain dances and hauling hoses around, sick of the
heat, humidity and rain-free beautiful E TN days)
