Katy is right, climbers bloom after 2-3 years so you should not cut them
back for a while.  Get a good book on how to "train" the rose.  Left to
themselves, most climbers would be a tangle, as they are in natural
settings.  But like all of nature, gardening is an attempt to train the
plant for our purposes.  It's my understanding that you usually train the
canes as vertically as possible to promote "breaks" where new little shoots
will grow and flower.

That's the simple explanation.
