I'm in zone 5, Chicago. I cut the roses back, after the ground is
frozen, and then hill up topsoil about halfway up the plant. Last year,
I also covered the canes with straw, but I ended up with a lot of grass
growing in my garden this year.
This year, I'm going to trim the lower branches of some spruce trees in
my yard and cover the canes with these. I'm also going to try spraying
with horticultural oil, before I cover the roses up.
All my roses survived last winter.
