Re: Landscaping ideas - Tad Long

Hi Lori,

Oh fun, fresh dirt and a new garden. Very exciting, but overwhelming too.

I just made my garden last May from scratch... (new house in old pastures)
and these are some of the things that helped me... mind you, I wouldn't call
it "landscaping" rather a rose/perennial garden with lawn paths and a newer
Heirloom veggie garden South of it.

Each time you driving about your neighborhood, jot down ideas and plans that
look appealing and attractive to you. Take a camera and snap some pictures.
Also buy lots of garden magazines with more ideas to clip... filling up a
shoe box with these ideas...Later pick through and decide which ones will
work for you. (some you may hold back till later.)

Think about what you like about gardens. What is soothing to you? What
kind of plants do you like? What activities will you need to do in this
"garden"? Sand-boxes? Playhouses? Places to just enjoy coffee/tea with
friends? What things will grow well for you?

Then take plenty of stakes and string and start "map it out" in the dirt
.... leave them up for days, walk about them at different times of the day
and rearranging as you need. Besure to draw it down on paper before tilling
it all up... :-P

THEN... Invest in Great soil... as Liz Driutt say's.... "Honor Your
Soil".... When building our home we excavated off the topsoil were the
house was to be and placed it where I wanted my garden to be... then we
added (to a 50x70 area) 8 yards of mushroom compost, 7-8 yards of
Mt.St.Helens sand/ash, and about 80# of lime, as our soil had not been
worked in many years. Then I mounded this tilled, enriched soil into beds,
and planted. Later we tilled up the paths about my rose islands and planted
lawn.

Go for it and make it the garden of your dreams...

PS... I "healed-in" my roses from my old home into the pastures and fence
them from the sheep... perhaps you have a "removed" area that you to can
temporary set yours. Near a water source.
