Re: Floribundas

I'm very new to rose growing and don't use sprays so I've been quite
fussy about disease-resistance in choosing the very few I have. In late
August nearly all the roses at the nurseries/gardens here were looking
awfully naked and covered with black spot, powdery mildew and rust.

The healthiest looking rose I found at any place I looked was the
floribunda 'Brass Band'. There was not one speck of disease or insect
damage on the dozen or so remaining plants. The foliage was lush and
full and seemed to have not suffered at all from the summer heat. The
late season flower color was yellow/light red--a bit gaudy. It's
supposed to have scent but I didn't notice any from the bloom I got
before frost.

I have also had very good luck with Morden Blush floribunda although
I've been told it gets black spot in the South. Summers haven't been
particularly beastly hot but the humidity has been bad the two years it
has been in. It was a bare root plant I had to hold a couple of weeks
before planting last year. This year I moved it, frost killed back the
new foliage three times and my Newfoundland pulled it partway out of
the ground by napping on it. Nothing seemed to faze it--it just kept
growing and blooming. The bloom varies from a warm, pale to light
medium pink and the scent varies from light to medium, depending on the
weather.

Both roses are planted in organically rich, well-drained soil and get
plenty of water via drip irrigation.
