Asata,
Suckers take energy from the rest of the plant and might eventually take
it over entirely.  If you suspect a cane is a sucker, you need to remove
the soil around it and see where it's coming from.  If it's coming from
below the bud union, the advice I've gotten is to rip the critter off
the plant, because just cutting it will inspire it to come back stronger
than ever.
