RE: Watering Methods

My garden is now 3 months old (was old unworked field) with 80
roses, a dozen small trees and shrubs, and an assortment of
perennials. Up until now, I have been using a watering wand (which I
love as it doesn't beat up the small perennials) to hand water the
grass and roses (just at their toes). Soon to be a thing of the past.

I am just now installing drip emitters to each rose from 1/4 inch
line that connects to 1/2 inch main. My 50x70 foot (thus far) garden
has raised "islands" and borders with 6 foot wide grass paths. The
new lush grass is now watered by small "mist-like" sprinklers on a
separate line. (a challenge as these paths meander to and fro) I put
them on a separate line, figuring the "lawn" would need less water
than the roses. (Finishing touches on new house are being neglected,
but the garden can't wait. Besides it's funnier than trimming and
painting.)

Deciding which type of pieces to use, and get the best stuff for my
space without paying too much was the hardest part of the puzzle. I
purchased a little bit of many and will take back what I don't like.

Better Homes & Garden actually has a very nice little kit. (found in
my Walmart shop) Though the price would be higher in the long run, if
you just want something to get started, it's a good place to start.

My advantage is my plumber husband. Though he has never installed a
garden water system before, he has great empathy for my project. He
picks up the pieces (usually for discount). I install the whole works
(only one of us per project, as we both like to be the boss) and he
will do the final hook up to the house, where the plumbing skills are
a real plus, and I don't have a clue.

So I'll be playing in the "water" during this nasty hot weather.

PS.-Did use small children (okay two teen age boys) to help put
in grass, move tilled up amended soil into islands and dig most
of the rose holes.
