Fragrance

Hello

I've been enjoying hearing about everyone's favorite fragrant roses. I'm
new to rose gardening but mostly interested in roses with lots of
fragrance. This year is my first effort at putting in a rose garden. I'm
growing a rosa gallica, which is now covered with bloom. She's so
beautiful. My first up close look at an old rose type. I'm in love! I'm
also growing De Meaux which I got from Wayland's catalog. I've been a bit
disappointed in it. Getting black spot when none of it's neighbors were.
It was billed as a very fragrant old rose with minature buds and good for
potpouri but I strained my nose trying to find the fragrance. Any one
have experience with De Meaux? It put out about 6 flowers and that was
it.

I'm growing Fragrant Cloud, Evelyn (yummy smell and very beautiful English
form blossom) and also Melody Parfume, heavenly fragrance and what a
color. These I bought from Jackson Perkins' catalog. Locally I bought
two hybrid musks, Bubble Bath which has a good fragrance and Buff Beauty
which is indeed beautiful but very slow getting started, actually doing
more creeping than climbing! I also have Double Delight .....wonderfully
fragrant. Last but not least I'm growing Bewitched, which is so beautiful
I've used up a whole roll of film taking pictures. It has a really
wonderful Damask type fragrance.

I'm fighting rust and blackspot because of so much moisture here in
northern California. It's discouraging but I tried the Miracid spray
someone recommended and that has been helpful. I was wondering what folks
are using for mulches. Several of my roses are in containers and now tha
the heat and sun are building, they're drying out pretty quickly. Also
the aphids are arriving in droves. I've read people's suggestion of using
a water spray to knock them off. I've been kind of reluctant with all the
warnings in every book about water on the leaves. When is the best time
to do this? Will this make the blackspot, etc worse by spreading it?

Best Wishes!
