Grafted vs. ownroot roses/burying the budunion on grafted roses

Okay, I don't want to start a range war here, but I wanted to get some
comments on your personal experiences with each method of growing roses
mentioned in the caption.

After lots of miserable experiences with grafted roses (the tops dying or
eventually dying out after several years with no new canes to replace them
-- you can only "thin" a plant so much in that scenario), I was "sold" on
own root and still am.

In my search for Jacqueline Du Pres, which was finally successful through
Rosarie at Bayfields (thanks Paul) I did have to go with a grafted rose.  I
happened to get someone quite knowledgeable that took my order -- may have
even been the owner -- but his advice for avoiding the dying/eventual dying
out of the grafted plants is to plant the bud union 3" BELOW soil level.  He
said this promotes own rooting, thus producing new canes, and also prevents
the winter die back.

In my climate, 6b, we've always been instructed to plant the bud union ABOVE
ground.  Does anyone have experience with burying the bud union in a climate
similar to mine?  Anxious to hear from all of you.
