My local "rosarian" stated that where the winters are harsh (eg. zone 6 and below), the bud
union should be at least 4 inches below the ground for protection . Warmer climates can
have their bud unions above ground.
For example, I live in Kelowna,BC (zone 6). By planting the union below ground level,
practically ANY rose would have a great chance of survival over winter - even Hybrid Teas.
In Vancouver BC (zone 7?) , where the weather is (generally!) warmer, it is not always
necessary to do this.
I also read a good "rose book" from a professional gardener in Ontario (can't remember his
name) who also made the same claims: any rose can survive harsh winters if the bud union
is planted a good 6 inches below the surface.
