River sand or any course sand, gypsum, and lots of organic matter worked 
like a charm for us.  When we moved here the soil was heavy clay 
hardpan-we spent lots of time adding to our soil.  Now every year we just 
add organic matter.  You would never now  now what was below our built up 
planting medium that is unless you visited the nieghbors.
