I have Veilchenblau, (I wasn't quite sure, but Lynn's picture cinched
it.) My father had it for eight years in cold winters of Bend, in
terrible ''concrete'' like sand. He was mowing over it the last
several years. It was just 5 inches tall in May of 98 when I dug it
up and moved it here. It is has nearly three feet canes now. I had
one tiny blossom on it last year. I'd call that very hardy..
Father called it the "Blue Rose'', which Beales say's is it's
common name. Heirloom OGR last carried it in their 1997
catalog. Perhaps they have it yet. I'm not much for purple, but
these are kind of cute with white-ish centers.
Hum... HOGR's say's it has a strong orange fragrance, no thorns,
tolerates shade where the blooms will appear blue. A mulitfloria that
is great for a pillar and gets 15 feet. Hardy zones 5-9.
There are several old bushes of Veilchenblau about our town, most
folks have trimmed them into short mounds that are fully covered in
blooms. (Seems to me they don't bloom all that long.) This mounds are
about 3 -4 feet tall and 5-7 feet wide, all in full sun.
PS.. They turn an interesting grayish/blue-lilac color as they fade.
Sincerely,
~Carleen~
