WELL, when I lived in Alabama in Z8b, ALL of the Old Fashioneds I tried
(damasks, hybrid perpetuals, etc.) were stripped nude by blackspot by the
time June rolled around.
I wish I had tried the hybrid rugosas then! I have a few now that are
fantastic -- healthy, lush, and vigorously everblooming, with an attractive
fall display of orange hips -- and I heartily recommend them to anyone who
lives in steamy summers. (DC area Z6b here...)
The only potential problem is size: Conrad Ferdinand Meyer can get to 8-10'
with a real sprawling habit if not tended, but the light lavender pink
flowers (up to 6" across when full-blown) and great scent will convince
anyone to make room for it. Sarah van Fleet is also nice, but is smaller,
medium pink, and has smaller flowers.
There are plenty out there, and most if not all are even suitable for
hedging.
There's my $0.02!

I have a cowboy friend that loves roses.
He's only grown Hybrid Teas and Red
Blaze. He's tired of fighting the black spot
(raining zone 8). For a house warming gift
I would love to get him an Old or English
rose. One that has a wonderful bush, hardy,
healthy and disease resistant. Must have a
"curl your toes" fragrance, and continuial
blooming would be nice. (Got to make his
intro. to old roses a good one.)
What would you recommend ?
