I would not let this product come in contact with the roots. Put down a layer
of good garden soil first, at least an inch. I am assuming the minis are in
the ground. I wouldn't worry about nitrogen loss due to decomposition of the
mulch because the process is very slow; and you'll be replacing it through
your regular feeding program. I hope you are enjoying your garden as much as I
enjoy mine.
