Carleen:
Here's an herb to try under some roses: origanum (oregano) laevigatum
'Herrenhausen' - it's approx. 15"hx24"w, has small redish/purply leaves
deepening
to purple by summer's end, has redish/violet flowers from mid-summer to early
fall and has a sprawling habit. An eye-catching under the right rose. And
it's drought
tolerant and likes well-drained soil so it wouldn't want to stand in water in
the winter.
With the rain you get, I'd guess it would prefer a raised bed.
I'm trying two "ground covers" this year around some roses: Liriope muscari
'Silvery
Sunspot' (lily turf), which is varigated with creamy stripes down its stiff
daylily-type of leaf (Daylilies would also work well)and produces lavendar
flowers in mid to late summer (and I just mis-planted 18 of them because I
failed to read my own diagram carefully!); and Dianthus 'Bath's Pink' (pinks,
carnations), not of its flower color (light pink with maroon eyes) but
because this variety stands up well to the sweltering heat and humidity of
the Midwest and has lovely blue/green foliage. Both of these plants are
between 10" and 15", respectively.
Does anyone have any taller, non-vining perennials that work well with roses?
I've
tried a smaller buddleia ('Nanho Blue') and a pyracantha ('Walker's Pride)
that have
really set off the shrub rose 'Golden Wings' and rugosa 'Sarah Van Fleet'
beautifully.
