Here is how I do it--with some, but not total, success. I take cuttings
that have a branching, as the node where the side shoot comes out seems to
be more willing to root. I pot in sterile medium or vermiculite (I live in
a not dry climate). I clip off the side shoot or not depending on if the
whole thing will fit in the pot. I usually take about a 12 inch cutting
with two or three leaflets above ground in the pot. Sink the node halfway
into the pot. Water well, but not soggy, and keep it in good light but no
sun. I do not use rooting hormone and have had better results without.
Sometimes, the main cutting does not grow much, but a new shoot comes up
from the root as it develops. Some roses are much harder to root than
others--I have particular trouble with Bourbons. I pot on the roses when
they have a good root system, and then plant out or give away. Division of
suckering roses like rugosas also work well. Hope this helps--and let me
