I like Liz Druitt's saying..."Honor thy soil"... 

In my old garden I didn't care for the soil, always replacing sad
looking plants... now in this newer garden I've changed my thinking..
If I just feed the soil, the soil can feed the roses.  Like my sheep
raising, I keep the ewes health and well feed and they can feed and
care for the lambs.  No bottle feed lambs or roses here. (Matter of
speaking)  Soil and ewes make better far better stuff than I.
