Scrape away some of the outer tissue with your fingernail.  If you see some
green, they're still alive.  If there's only a pithy beige, you're out of
luck.  Green canes are also softer and eaiser to scrape than the dead ones.

You might want to try scraping different areas of the cane, starting near
soil level.  If you see brown down at that level, don't bother checking
further up.
