Brenda: Take a thumbnail and scratch back the "bark" of a stem. It should
show green. If not, the cane at least is dead. Try it on several branches.

I thought I had lost a shrub rose. I scratched a couple of canes and found
green. Now the shrub is starting to leaf out. There's a lot of dead wood to
remove, though.

Be patient for a couple more weeks.
