John, do you realize how many list members turned green (with envy) at your
good
fortune at not having any Japanese beetles - yet? Beware of any unmarked
packages that have a slight rustling sound...
Those wascally wabbits are tough to deal with - the only spray I've found
that's both
environmentally safe and also effective is something called Tree Guard. It
supposedly
has "the most bitter-known substance to man" as its base. I use it primarily
to deter
the deer from my taxus (one application each late fall is plenty here) but
I've used it on hosta (I reapply it as the hosta grows) and it seems to deter
the ground hog which devours everthing green in its path, so I'd guess it
would work on roses and thumpers as well. It's available at garden centers,
but if you have trouble locating it, let me know and I'll get you the address
in MN, which is where I originally ordered it from.
As for the other deterent mentioned, I'll take a pass...and I understand the
animal
urines manufactured for this purpose are collected from critters caged in the
poorest
of conditions.
I just lopped off a muscular tip on one of my Meidiland roses - it's so
beautiful - can
I do anything with it other than putting it in a vase? Could this be a
candidate for
propagation?
Bye - Joanie
