RE: No blooms!!

Hi Mia,

I was told that Portland roses (a group of old repeat blooming roses)
grew wonderfully in Australia. (though I don't recall where in
Australia.)

Are your other roses blooming fine ?
Is it possible that your Charles Austin is mis-labeled ?
Where did you buy it at ?
What do you fertilize with ?

I have one that was suppose to be Claire Rose, but I'm sure it is
really Charles Austin. It has been blooming very well, and I just
bought it early this spring. A trade would be nice, but I'm sure the
exporting and shipping would be silly.

Unless you pruned your climbing Souvenir de la Malmaison, perhaps she
just needed another year. Or perhaps the mildew was too much for her.
I have this same rose growing against the south wall of my house. I
just bought it this spring so it didn't bloom yet. Yes, mine has been
getting powdery mildew too. I do hope she's worth it, I've heard
she's lovely in bloom and the climbing variety opens better in our
wet springs. I use a home-make baking soda spray on my roses for
mildew. It removes the mildew for about a month on the really icky
ones, then I have to spray them again. Organic too.

1 gallon of water, 1 Tablespoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of (lemon)
liquid hand dishsoap, 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil.

This is enough to spray about 50-60 roses, it keeps fine. I spray
them on an overcast evening, sometimes washing them off with garden
hose first, then SOAK them in this spray. Let me know if that does
the trick for you.

Oops... did you say powering ? as in strong growth ? ... sorry,
thought you said powdery. If so, she probably just needed some time
to grow. Once blooming roses don't usually bloom in their first year.

What other roses do well in your garden ?

Sincerely,
