Rose Relocation

Since everyone seems to be responding to the list now, I need some help!

A friend of mine bought an older house that has a huge rose bush to one
side. I dare say it may be a climber as it has really long canes, but it
isn't attached to anything. It bloomed in the spring with a really pretty
pinkish mauve rose, smallish, but with an incredible scent. It had only
one bloom in September (could be because the bush was overgrown with weeds
where he couldn't cut it with a lawnmower) and has no thorns to speak of.
The best part is, he is willing to let me have it because he doesn't want
to fool with it and he thinks it is just something to mow around.

Is now a good time to cut it back and move it to my house? If so, what is
the best way to do this? I'm afraid the root system must run deep/wide as
it is a good sized bush and I don't really know what I'm doing. The books
I have differ on method and times to relocate.

Helpful info: I live in between zone 5/6, we've had a couple of light
frosts, it's raining today and tomorrow, daytime temps high 50's and low
60's, nighttime temps run in the 30's to low 40's. The bush has some new
growth.
