Sansevieria scabrifolia Dinter (Fedde Repert.Spec.Nov.30:85-86(1932) )
Rhizome horizontal and creeping. Leaf rosette consisting of 6-7 leaves,
which are 25-35 cms.long, and 16-20mm wide (laid flat). The rosettes are
narrower at the sessile base and widen to 28-30mm., gradually reducing at
the tip to a 2.5cm long, dry, sharp, yellowish-white tip. The leaf is
shaped into a channel or almost folded and the edges have a coloured edge
almost 1mm wide. The upper and lower sides, apart from this red edge, are
rough with dense hard tubercles. The 30 to 43 cms.long peduncle (including
the inflorescence) is 4-6mm.thick, smooth (not rough like the leaves) and
has 6-8 membrane-like, lanceolate, 20-23mm long, pointed bracts with around
8 veins. Flowers in clusters of 4-6, on the 25-30cms long and 6-7 mm wide
inflorescence.Flower stalks 7-8 mm long, jointed in roughly the middle.
Flowers 40-43 mm long, petals 20mm, yellowish-white, very narrow, widening
somewhat towards the tip. ending in a blunt tube. The 4.5mm anthers reach
the end of the petals, whereas the pistil protrudes 1mm. Fruits around
9-10mm, waxy-yellow berries.
The species differs from S.volkensii Gurke, which is the closest of the
tropical African Sansevierias, with its grey-green, cross-banded leaves
which are rough on both sides and marked with red, and with its 40mm long
inflorescence (with S.volk. the longest is 26mm.) It differs from
S.thyrsiflora Thbg. (= Sans.hyacinthoides (L.) Druce) in having only
2cm.wide leaves (in S.th. 3-5cms) and the rough upper surface. Whereas the
leaves are just as rough in S.th., this was certainly not overlooked by
Baker.

Sansevieria caespitosa Dinter [Fedde Repert.Spec.Nov.23:228 (1926) ]
[Namibia] N. : Maltahohe, Dinter 3148. [(B)?]; on the left side of the road
from Seeheim towards Kanus, Dinter.
Similar to S.thrysiflora [=Sans.hyacinthoides (L.) Druce] but only 10-20cms
tall, almost black-green, with hardly any discernable cross-banding.
Furthermore the rosettes grow as dense as grass, often 20-30 in a square
metre, whereas in S.thrysiflora [=Sans.hyacinthoides (L.) Druce] in the
same area you find only 1-3 rosettes. Flowers and fruit not yet seen.
I hope this is helpful. Juan, maybe you could cast an eye over it if you
have time.
Thanks Juan & Steve for all the info on Sans.kirkii and its various forms.
All the best
Alan
