Steve,
The type locality of Sansevieria parva N.E.Brown is indeed near the Gilgil
River, as mentioned in the description. I forgot to mention that Mbugua was
travelling with me and we collected it together. I have no idea what his
number is.
Don't blame yourself for misidentifying a plant through a description.
Sometimes it is impossible to identify it even when having the plant itself
in your hand! Why? Growing conditions affect the plants tremendously. I think
I may have said this before about the experience with Mbugua. We saw zillions
of S. roust in the field: big, robust yellowish, growing in the sun. No
exaggeration, perhaps as many as a quarter million. Miles and miles after.
When I showed him a small one growing under the big ones and asked him. "Do
you know what this plant is?" He replied "no". Almost all of the people in
this group would have known what the plant was. He did not. I told him "That
is exactly how S. robusta looks in cultivation".
Plants grown in cultivation, in the field, poorly grown plants in cultivation
or field, all look different.
Cheers,
Juan
