Juan,
That is an amusing story about Mbugwa's inability to identify the young,
sheltered plant of S. robusta. In cultivation at least, all those young
robusta, rorida, ehrenbergii types look maddeningly alike. It takes a lot of
patience to wait ten years to see what they'll grow into. I guess that's
what keeps me interested! Over time, there have been many instances when I
had acquired plants under different names, only to have them turn out to be
the same thing as each other after growing side by side for several years.
To my eye, plants grown in captivity under controlled conditions look much
better than do their cousins out in the field.....cleaner, better color,
etc.Yes, they can look like different species altogether. So I can
understand Mbugwa's confusion.
