open ground culture & S. grandis/hyacinthoides

Sue's note about Ed Eby's plants prompts me to ask how deep Sansevieria
roots usually grow in open ground. So if, for instance, I decide to
plant some out next spring, will I have to dig to China to pot them up
again in the fall?
Second newbie question: since S.grandis and S.thyrsifolia are just
synonyms for S.hyacinthoides, does that mean that plants sold under all
these names would grow in a similar way, i.e., sending rhizomes out the
drainage holes and/or through the bottoms of hanging baskets?
Thanks, all,
Carolyn
