Re: [SANS] Sans. grandis

Well Jim, now that the time limit on not posting has run out and the flood
of replies has finally died down. I have a question regarding what is
actually being grown as Sansevieria grandis.

Now remember, under the new rules, it isn't necessary for everyone to just
tell me I am wrong or to make slanderous accusations for my asking such
things, lets just talk about the plants for a change. Just try a piece of
Sansevieria pie and relax.

It may not be so much a question of cultural conditions but possibly yet
another plant identity crisis perpetuated in collections.

I wonder if the plant you got as Sans.grandis is actually Sans.'Mason
Congo'. I have seen the latter occasionally misidentified as the former.
When I first saw that, it got me wondering if it were correct but when I
tracked down the original illustration and description of Sans.grandis J.D.
Hooker (in Curtis's Botanical Magazine 129: t.7877 (1903)), it was
obviously indistinguishable from the original Sans.hyacinthoides (L.) Druce
(aka Sans.thyrsiflora Petagna, Sans.guineensis (L.) Willdenow).

Sans.'Mason Congo' has the broadest and largest leaves in the genus and is
quite
a spectacular plant. The true Sans.hyacinthoides has somewhat smaller,
darker, more strongly spotted leaves. The two are closely allied but
conspecific? I'm not sure. There is some other species with green unspotted
leaves misidentified as Sans.hyacinthoides in the trade.

I have mentioned this problem many times previously in the forum (with the
references cited) but have yet to get an informed response from those more
knowledgeable than me.

Everyone, please, tell us more about the plant you grow as Sans.grandis.

Cereusly Steve

Dear all;
        To change the subject....
I don't recall seeing the name S. grandis anywhere in recent posts.
I have grown a very distinctive Sans under this name for years. It must be
grown in a hanging basket as it pushes itself out of any pot I try it in.
Never bloomed for me either, but a happy grower.

Any input or experiences from anyone beside Hermine, Juan or Steve
?-not that I don't value their comments, but give someone else a chance.

                Jim W.
