Hi Steve,
The plant I have labeled as S. fasciata does indeed have a bicolor margin on
mature leaves, so perhaps it mislabeled. I also have a plant labeled
"Massai" which appears to be identical.
My S. aubrytiana also has bicolor margins, but it is distinctly different
from the fasciata I have, in that it has much brighter coloration, especially
on the bottoms of the leaves, grows taller and wider than fasciata, and is
more of a blue-green color overall as compared to the more yellow-green of
the fasciata. The fasciata also has narrower petioles, which is why I
suggested it as a possibility for John's plant. To confuse the issue, I also
have one labeled S. liberica which very closely resembles the aubrytiana, but
which, for me, grows a bit shorter.
These are all fairly big plants that I've been growing for at least 15 years.
Since I've been collecting and growing these plants for such a long time
(since before I was ever interested in their origins or their taxonomy), I
can't vouch for the accuracy of the labels they came with since I can't even
remember where I got most of them. And I haven't ever really paid any
attention to their flowers. But I will from now on, and I do appreciate your
scholarly insights. I also have Brown's monograph, but haven't ever really
taken the time to key out my plants. One day, in my dotage..........
However, checking Brown just now, he states that S. fasciata, Cornu ex Gerome
& Labroy does have "margins at first green, finally very narrowly whitish or
reddish, with age sometimes decomposing into very fine fibers" which
accurately describes my plants. So who to believe?
