Thanks Jon for your discussion on cultivar names.
The way I determined cultivar names in my book is, as one would expect, by
priority. I called many times and visited personally those people who, at
the time, I deemed to have the best knowledge of S. trifasciata cultivars.
This was not a very easy task. The name "Gray Lady", which I did not
particularly like, came as a result of that, as I was informed the name was
already around at the turn of the century.
Priority is of importance for cultivars (not only for species) as well
according to the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants.
Dimensions for species and cultivars are elastic, as well as number of
leaves. So, your plant "could' be the same one.
However, I still remember (believe it or not!) when I visited your very
fine collection, more than ten! years ago, that your plant impressed me as
something different. The problem is: does it qualify as another cultivar?
If you are able to put it in writing, so that it can be used as an
identifying tool, then you do have different cultivar. Even one different
character will qualify for it. I leave it to your discretion since I do not
have the plant. Again make sure that you capitalize the cultivar name(s).
Best regards,
Juan
