Food, Land and People

Greetings fellow School Garden enthusiasts,

I am contemplating the purchase of the Project Food, Land and People Curriculum. I wanted to know if anyone has any feedback on it yet.

I've been searching the web for information about the contents as well as sample lessons and activities but have been unsuccessful so far in finding info. I would also like to hear feedback from anyone who has participated in the regional trainings that have been offered.

It seems as if the FLP curriculum may be adopted in several states as an Ag Ed Framework. If my understanding is correct, Utah has all ready done so. California may standardize a state framework for agriculture education through the Agricultural Education Act of 1999 (AB 1645). The bill is being considered by the state senate at this time.

I hope that as our states develop frameworks for agriculture education, the curriculum designers regard sustainable agriculture principles and practices as a focal point. We will be doing a great dis-service to our students if we insturct them in outmoded thoughts and ideals. Never before has it been more important to teach students the theory and practice of responsible food production. We will soon live in a world where 6 billion people will need to be fed each day. The way we grow food now will not accomodate this demand. Our students will be responsible for developing solutions to this potential catastrophe.

Does FLP address sustainable methods of food production? How can we ensure that state frameworks are developed with our students best interests in mind?
