Schoolyard Habitats / Habitat Stewards Intern

Started in 1973, the Backyard Wildlife Habitat program is a national
program that inspires and assists people who are providing habitat for
wildlife in the landscapes around their homes, schools, workplaces, and in
their communities.  Two key projects of the Backyard Wildlife Habitat
Program are: Habitat Stewards, the volunteer training and mentoring arm of
the program; and Schoolyard Habitats, which focuses specifically on
assisting schools, teachers and community members in the use of school
grounds as learning sites for wildlife conservation and cross-curricular
learning.

DUTIES:  Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Schoolyard Habitats and
Habitat Stewards programs including: processing of applications for
certification in the program; handling constituent communications;
coordinating Habitat Stewards volunteers; developing educational resources;
assisting with training; and maintaining database.  Intern is also
responsible for aspects of maintening/updating of the program's World Wide
Web site.

QUALIFICATIONS: B.A. or B.S. degree in environmental sciences,
environmental education, plant ecology, horticulture, landscape design or
related subject area. Must have strong academic and/or personal background
in basic principals of ecology, environmental education, volunteer
coordination. Must have excellent communications skills (written and oral)
and organizational abilities. Position requires managing multiple tasks at
one time and a good amount of flexibility given the diversity of
responsibilities. Familiarity with Windows-based PC applications such as
WordPerfect, Netscape, Microsoft Access.  Basic knowledge of HTML
programming required. 

SALARY: $275/week, no room or board provided

LOCATION: Vienna, Virginia

STARTING DATE: September 1, 1999

INTERNSHIP LENGTH: 24 weeks (6 months)
