Grant Deadline is November 15

The Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Fund has an application deadline of
November 15, 2000. This program gives small monetary grants to schools,
nature centers, houses of worship, or other educational organizations.

Typical projects design, establish and maintain a native plant community
such as a prairie, woodland or wetland. They may also include
plant-centered wildlife habitat such as butterfly gardens, bird nesting or
watering sites, and similar features.

Projects must emphasize youth involvement and increase the educational value
of the site. Creativity in designing projects is encouraged. The use of
native plants or seeds is mandatory, and any plants or seeds used should be
appropriate to the site.

This program is sponsored by Wild Ones Natural Landscapers, a organization
of homeowners who use native plants in residential landscaping. It honors
Lorrie Otto, a Milwaukee-area teacher who pioneered school gardening
projects using native plants. Awards will be announced in February, 2001.
