Re: Sqft Gardener's Logbook - week of 4/3/00

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi Teri,

It comes from my "waste not want not". Last month my son and I limbed up
all the trees. I utilized every single bit of wood. Made two bean
towers, and made a trellis connecting them. There were a few odd shaped
limbs left, not strait enough and with branches coming off at weird
angles. I cut off all the twigs and the narrowest branches. That left me
just with the clean but odd shaped limbs. I attached these to my tall
stockade fence with twine, the longer ones I additionally sunk into the
ground using a post hole digger for stability. I tried to get the bends
in the limbs all at the same heights, eyeballed it, and it came out
pretty close. I have strung some of the bends horizontally already,
tomorrow I'll finish the rest of it with the twine I bought today. In
effect this will give me a wall for growing vines that is almost 24 feet
long. The horizontal twine creates "rungs" about 14" apart. It's very
funky and rustic looking, but it matches the bean towers and the trellis
wall. The overall look is nice, I am very happy with it, even Hubs, who
is so particular with certain things likes it too.

I made all these structures for no money except for the cost of the
twine, which is just jim dandy. I try to keep my money in my pocket as
best I can.

Three of the limbs were placed next to emerging emerging hops and autumn
clematis so I wont have to worry about trellising them this year.

Trudi
