I think that Mel recommends spacing at one per sq ft.
My trellis was along a 16 ft. raised bed, and I spaced at wider 18 in.
intervals.
Yes, the skin does turn more golden, and Minn. Midgets slip, pull away from
the stem when ripe.  It's also easy to lean over and smell them with the
vines growing vertically.
