Yikes! Now you've gone and reminded me of Mr. Barton, my 9th grade algebra
teacher, he of the bowtie who would thunder down at me "Bobby why isn't your
homework done?" And me thinking - you probably never heard of the Lone
Ranger, let alone watched him on TV last nite!!
On topic- it's the 6"x6" concrete reinforcing mesh bought in rolls. Use 9
sections, 54" total, bending the end of the 6th horizontal section back to
loop around 1st vertical reduces the diameter from the mathematical 17.1" to
~16". I've experimented with 12 to 24" diameter and 16 seems to work the
best as I tend to grow more indeterminate than determinate varieties. I
used to use a 24" dia cage 2 1/2' high with determinate but I've gotten old
and lazy, so use one size that fits nicely in my beds. I use binder twine to
hold them together, just cut it off at the end of the season, it falls into
the bed & decomposes - unlike those newfangled twist ties. Besides it has a
million uses around the garden and brings back fond memories on a quieter
simpler time.
>At first your term "monolithic" confused me, I had envisioned some sort

Stonhenge >here too as I will use big and medium cages for support.
Was forced into the Stonehedge method because here in Sacramento, known as
"Sacratomato", my indeterminates often grow over 8' tall sprawling over the
tops of the cages and becoming top heavy.
