Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Planted 2 plants each of 5 varieties of tomatoes in my 1' deep 4' x 10'
redwood raised beds. Placed a 16" dia. 5' tall cage around each tying
them together at top and bottom with twine. This forms a monolithic
unit that resists tipping. Used a post hole digger to dig a 12" to 16"
deep hole. Filled hole with sifted compost (1/2" screen) and planted
tomato in a recess about 2 " below bed surface (forms a natural basin to
hold water).
Hi Bob,
What did you make the cages with, did you use something with a 4x4 grid?
Did you buy a roll of it and cut it to size? I haven't had my coffee yet
and haven't done the algebra yet, if it is 16" accross you used a lenght
of caging about 24" long? It seems very interesting and purposeful. What
did you hold the cage together with? I have "zip ties" that my
electrician husband will give me, I think they will hold nice and tight.
At first your term "monolithic" confused me, I had envisioned some sort
of tomato Stonehenge rising form your bed, LOL! Actually, I have a huge
bed for growing tomatoes in and they will be planted out in the next
week or two. I have several varieites of indeterminates, including
sweet gazillions or something like that) oxheart, I have some Czech
Bush, some Homesteads which are supposed to take the heat, and a couple
of "one footer" Tiny Tims. I can envision making a Stonhenge here too as
I will use big and medium cages for support. The tiny tins will get a
three foot bamboo stake each, and as they are so small they will
probably get potted up.
