Planted Tomatoes - Father Mel forgive me !!

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Planted 2 plants each of 5 varieties of tomatoes in my 1' deep 4' x 10'
redwood raised beds. Placed a 16" dia. 5' tall cage around each tying them
together at top and bottom with twine. This forms a monolithic unit that
resists tipping. Used a post hole digger to dig a 12" to 16" deep hole.
Filled hole with sifted compost (1/2" screen) and planted tomato in a
recess about 2 " below bed surface (forms a natural basin to hold water).

Experimented this year with one plant getting osmicoat added to the compost
and one just compost. My wife tried this in one of the flower beds last year
and I had to admit the osmocoat flowers were definitely larger & more
intensely colored.

This spacing is not percisely according to Mel, but let me explain. We have
found that planting the end 18" or so of the tomato bed with a wildflower
blend yields a riot of color. I also believe wildflowers bring both
benefical insects and a much needed balance to the bed.

I live in the Sacramento Valley where we have 1000's of acres of commercial
tomato fields. It's so easy to grow tomatoes here, that if a seed fell into
the dust in the house it would probably sprout!! I think the point is a
SQFT'er does not just grow things, rather our garden is relfection of who we
truely are. Happy SQFTing and I'll report as the season progresses on my
(wifes) commercial fertilizer (ugh) trial.
