Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi Katherine. In regards to growing spuds in a small space (barrel)--please go to
www.taunton.com/kg/
Then, click on GROWING in the upper left corner
Next page, click on A BARREL OF SPUDS----this article gives you a great
visual of what you are planning and information on their technique.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
I just planted my first square (4 x 4) in my new square foot garden. We are hovering in the 30's and 40's at night here in Colorado but are expecting warm days. Whew. What a job (labor of love) that was to get my raised beds built (wonderful husband), filled and mixed. I am very excited. I marked off the square with black yarn (someone's fine tip on the list here) and planted carrots, bright lights chard, heirloom beets, heirloom lettuce and some nasturtiums before it got too windy to be outside. I covered the whole bed with plastic as I have to travel for work tomorrow and the wind has been wicked. I don't want the vermiculite to dry out. It still seems very strange to me to plant those little teeny weeny lettuce seeds 4 to a square. But, I did it. I have several more squares to go. I hope to start my second raised bed soon. I am planning to get two heirloom tomatoes (established in pots) in soon--"Comanche Purple" and "Mortgage Lifter"--with walls of water.
Question--do you plant mesclun the same way as leaf lettuce?
4 to a square?
And, do muskmelons need to be on their own away from the 4 x 4 bed?
Or can I use a square in the raised bed along with the veggies? My
guess is that their roots may be very invasive???? TIA.
