I've seen bags or organic and inorganic compost for sale at Home Depot.
Will this work as well as home-made compost (which I don't have now, and
which I won't have ready for awhile)?

It won't work as well as home-made......but until you HAVE some it will
help a lot. I've been using the Composted Manure and topsoil from Home Depot
for several years with good results. At the community garden I was using,
until I bought the house in '99, we had no compost pile, then last spring I
built a large new bed using a total of120 bags of TS and 40 of Composted
Manure..with wonderful results...Oh yes and 30bags of mulch as well.
Fortunately I know a teen who wanted money as much as I wanted to save
my back..he helped me spread out another 40bags of TS and CM this year and
10bags of shredded bark in the paths....40lbs each......... On to the raised
Flower beds I'm going to do this fall...............................let's see
40ft x 6" deep.......Oh Jacob!!!!!!!

ps ..... I finally got to do some planting....3x4 ft of strawberries(new
this year), lettuce(2 kinds), spinach, broccoli, brussel sprouts, peas, and a
trial at corn....and some flowers. I still need to do the onions, carrots,
some herbs(parsley/oregano/thyme/rosemary/marjoram...I still have too much
basil from last year), and beets.
Then I can rest until time for the tomatoes, peppers, zuchinni, beans,
potatoes, more flowers, cucumbers, canteloupe(another first trial) and
eggplant .....yes of course more carrots and onions (and some garlic in the
fall)
