In my back yard, where I have the more unsightly beds, I have one
section that is vertical only, about 1 foot across. There are also
two 4-foot wide areas.
There's a whole system of vertical supports over and between the
beds, made of metal electrical tubing. I use outdoor electrical boxes
and compression fasteners as 3- and 4-way corner connectors. I have
trellis netting, or in some cases nylon cord, stretched between the
supports, and have successfully trained cucumbers and tomatoes to
arch over the paths.
