Thanks Janet, I'll wait until May 10th or so to try the direct seeding.
No worries about the rooftop gardening, I have two 2x4 raised concrete block
beds.
How about peppers? Does direct seeding work with peppers as well?
Thanks again,
Richard

Richard, writing from Brooklyn, asked
>Do I need to presoak the seeds or anything special?
In my experience, toms are very willing to germinate in warm, moist soil
without presoaking.
Up your way, I should think you'd want to wait to direct-seed tomatoes
until around May 10. Of course, if you're doing rooftop gardening in
containers, things will be warm enough much sooner. Be sure to set your
rooftop containers onto bricks or cement blocks or something that won't
conduct heat well. Letting the containers touch the roof's surface would
pretty much cook the growing rootlets inside.
