stuff as flower pots and such). They are open at both ends and about 3
feet tall and 1 foot square (open at both ends). We stood them on their
ends, filled them 3/4 full of good potting soil, watered it, cut up our
potatoes and tossed 3-4 chunks in each one, added potting soil so that it

Hi,
A thought for you for next year: sounds like your planters are great. The
reason people plant close to the bottom of the ring/barrell/container they
are using, and then add soil or mulch as the plants grow, is that the potato
roots wont produce tubers below the depth the seed piece is planted. You can
check this when you empty your containers and see if there are spuds in the
lower 3/4 that you planted on top of. If you plant near the bottom, and add
soil/mulch every few weeks, you should get more taters per plant because they
will produce tubers all the way up to the top using this method. Just
remember to leave a few inches of leaves exposed when you add soil. A little
more work, but probably well worth it if all the articles I have read on this
are correct.
