WoW, Corn Meal, was Re: Weeding around corn/ was Hand pol...

Hi Robert,
I used Gardens Alive CGM (corn gluten meal) last year with pretty good results.
It was expensive and *apparently*, it's derived as a waste product from
corn syrup production. The package says it's ok to double the recommended
rate of application. $$$$
I was more than a little upset that they wanted $19.95 for 25 pounds of "corn".
I realize that research was neccessary to certify the product, but...
From my understanding of the initial discovery (my understanding may be
faulty), it was anecdotally noted that weeds didn't really grow well where
corn gluten meal happened to be spilled around the corn syrup processing
plant. Not a lot of research dollars involved in that...
Also, Gardens Alive mentioned CGM in their previous years catalog. Take a
look at the writeup in this years catalog. Maybe too many people made the
same connection I did?

The point of all of this? (finally, VBG)
A $1.95 five pound bag of unbleached stoneground corn meal from the grocery
store seems to be almost as effective.

I apply it as a heavy dust, at about the same rate you find yellow pine
pollen on your car in the spring. I gently water it in afterwards and wash
it off the plants.
Will keep you updated on further results.

I would highly recommend Gardens Alive kelp meal and fish emulsion
products. We've had great success with both. If you can find a cheaper
source of each, please let me know.

Have fun
