Eek! I answered this question earlier, and was thinking of the 'dog's-tooth'
violet (Erythronium), which is probably the only violet NOT in the Viola
family!

Yes, they are a member of the viola family

Yes, they are edible. Kind of like sweet lettuce.

Simply pick the flowers, trim the stem off as close to the flower head as
possible and scatter them whole on salads, or dip them in a white egg wash
and dust them with sugar to use as decorations on cakes.
A local store here sells them for about $25.00 per pound =-O
