since the subjects come up, i'd like to talk some more about this...
mel recommends no more than 2 sq. for 1 person to manage the first year.
 i'm
jumping into the eq. of four (2 beds at 4X8' each) and justifying it by my
(limited) experience with gardening. how many beds would a heavy veggie
eater
need/person to supply the food? i'm not as interested in putting foods away
for the winter, just eating alot of fresh homegrown produce this summer.
variety in the foods is important to me to which automatically requires more
 space.

We have 2(4'x8') beds and 3(3'x4') beds for the 2 of us...OTOH we DO freeze
tomatoes and peppers but then again we also grow lots of veggies in
containers on our balconies(gardening in an Apt Complex) so it seems to even
out. we eat LOTS of veggies during the growing season. We gave up on
corn(too much space) and we don't do potatoes, and the Zucchini we do are
the "Spacemizer" type that take up @2'X2' each. Hope this helps.
