the tomato rescue thread


I know I'm late on this response, but yes, you can get good results by 
'trenching' your tomato seedlings when you set them out. Just dig a small 
shallow trench the length of the plant and lay it on it's side. Cover all 
but the top growth and a bit of stem. You'll have a little 2 - 3" plant 
sticking out of the ground where you might have had an 6 - 8 " seedling 
before. It'll keep the wind from damaging the plants, and tomatoes will grow 
root nodes all along the length of the stem when exposed to soil.
I find I can set mine out somewhat earlier if I do this since not much top 
growth is exposed to the elements, and easier to protect.
