Keith,
I tried Burpee's "Fourth of July" tomato last year and was disappointed. The
plants did produce a lot of fruit. Unfortunately, a lot of the fruit cracked
(probably my fault) and the 45 days to fruit was more like 60. The fruits were
a little bit bigger than golf balls - Too small for sandwiches and a little too
big to put in salads without being cut up. Of course, I'm in a colder climate
than you are (Zone 6 - Pittsburgh PA - Last frost May 10-31) so you may have
better luck.
This year my attempt at early tomatos will be "Oregon Spring" planted under
wall-of-waters. My hypothesis is that the "Fourth of July" delayed fruiting
because of cold temperatures. "Oregon Spring" is supposed to set fruit in cold
weather.
I'm also trying a tomato called "Micro-Tom". If I remember my catalogue info
right, it is supposed to be a smaller version of "Tiny Tim". These plants are
tiny, about the size of a grapefruit - but they are flowering NOW! I bought the
seeds because I wanted to try them indoors next winter. When I got the seeds I
figured what the heck, I'll try four now. It looks like this variety will get
me my earliest tomatoes; although they are grown in containers. (I got
Micro-Tom from Pinetree.) This year I'm also going to try Rose and Red Current
from Johnnys Selected Seeds.
Alex.
