Where should I buy my plants from?
Dear folks,
I have so far received a small handful of catalogues this year, and I
wanted to get some advice on who to buy plants, potatoes, etc. from
whether through catalogues or via the web, and also what varieties to
purchase.
I would like to purchase the following as plants/crowns:
Strawberries - I quite fancy the Alpine variety, and would prefer
strawberries that produce over a period of time rather than all at
once.
Asparagus - UC 157 has been recommended and I'd like to try that.
Rhubarb - For use in rhubarb and blackberry crumble *smile*
Raspberries
Blackberries
Potatoes (seed potatoes). I love red potatoes, and Yukon Gold,
although I don't know any specific varieties of red potatoes.
I live in western NC, zone 7. My husband thinks we've had our last
frost, but I'm waiting a few more weeks. Besides, he hasn't finished
digging the beds yet.
I'm not into the biggest fruits/veggies possible. I'd prefer good
production over a period of time, good texture and flavour, keeping
qualities, etc.
I don't want a lot of each type of plant. Enough for the 2 of us to
eat moderately, and make some jams and preserves (from the fruit). I'd
like to start some Alpine Ruben strawberries from seed next year, and
perhaps try the Alpine Reds from Shepherds Seeds this year.
Also, our mail goes to a PO Box in town, which we usually check about
once a week (although I may be able to get the postmaster to call me
once a package arrives), so good shipping practices - packaging,
quality plants, etc. - is important. Also, I'd prefer a smaller
quantity of larger, healthier plants, than masses of tiny things (as
seems to be available from Burpee).
Advice on varieties and companies appreciated.
Thank you,
Dara - still waiting for her peas to come up.
