Dore,
Good luck with your cinder block beds. I've had mine in place for over a
year, and this spring's strawberry harvest has been fantastic!!! I planted
one plant in each hole last Nov. They are day neutrals--Chandler. They
started flowering at the end of January, and since Valentine's Day, I've
picked non-stop!! I have 96 holes planted in strawberries. So far, we've
eaten gobs (every day) and froze 54 pints. I pick a pint of fresh berries
every day, and at least once a week, I harvest over a quart. The berries
are getting smaller in size now, so I think the peak of the season was about
April 1st. They should produce until the horrid heat gets here--about May
1. In other block holes, I have nasturiums, marigolds (these two flowers
are in the blocks that line the tomato bed), mints (5 kinds), chives,
oregano, sage, lavender and thyme. Now, I'm trying to figure out what to
put in the holes when the strawberries come out--something that will take
the intense heat and humidity of a Gulf Coast Texas summer. Any suggestions?
